What is the Common Conditions Service?

McCabes Pharmacy is now offering the Common Conditions Service across all our 110 pharmacies.

This service allows pharmacists to offer professional healthcare advice and treatment to patients, including prescribed medications if appropriate, for 8 specific common conditions.

The Common Conditions Service was recommended by the Expert Taskforce to Support the Expansion of the Role of Pharmacy .

UTI Support & Treatment

Urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis, are very common and can cause symptoms such as burning when passing urine, needing to urinate frequently, and discomfort in the lower abdomen.

At McCabes Pharmacy, our pharmacists can provide professional advice and treatment options for eligible patients through our pharmacy services.

If symptoms are appropriate, pharmacists may provide treatment or recommend suitable over-the-counter support products.

Speak to a Pharmacist About UTI Treatment

Through the Common Conditions Service, McCabes pharmacists can assess and support certain infections without needing a GP appointment.

This service may include professional advice and treatment options where appropriate. Book your appointment below or contact your local McCabes Pharmacy.

Symptoms of a UTI

The professional consultation with our pharmacist will cost €35.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Burning or stinging when passing urine
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal discomfort
  • Feeling like the bladder is not fully empty

If symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by fever, medical attention should be sought.

When to Speak to a Pharmacist?

Alongside pharmacist advice, some over-the-counter products may help relieve symptoms or support urinary health. Products like urinary alkalising sachets work by reducing urine acidity to ease burning and stinging discomfort associated with cystitis symptoms

You should speak to a pharmacist if:

  • Symptoms have just started
  • This is a mild or occasional infection
  • You need advice on suitable treatment options

Seek medical advice urgently if:

  • Symptoms last more than 48 hours
  • You develop fever or back pain
  • You are pregnant
  • UTIs occur frequently
