How to use Garnier Olia Hair Colour
Always complete a skin allergy test 48 hours before you colour your hair to help reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.
Always complete a skin allergy test 48 hours before you colour your hair to help reduce the risk of an allergic reaction.
Before rinsing we recommend you dry-massage your hair to release the oils, add a little water, massage again and rinse until the water runs clear.
When you rinse the hair, the colour will act as a shampoo. Use the conditioner after rinsing and once the water runs clear.
If you've got grey hair try to avoid colours with more intense reflects (e.g. reds) as they tend to deliver less grey coverage than other shades.
Frequently Asked Questions
Before you colour with Garnier Olia
What if i've got grey hair?
Shades with more intense reflects (e.g. reds) tend to deliver less grey coverage than other shades. See ‘What do the shade numbers mean?’ below.
Can I use Olia over existing colour or highlights?
Yes. But the results will depend on the colour you have chosen. Follow the advice in 'Which colour would work best on me?'
Do I need to do an allergy test?
Always! It is essential that you perform a skin allergy test 48 hours before each use of Olia, as an allergy can develop suddenly, even if you’ve previously used a hair colourant before.
Application Questions
What if I have dry hair?
Dry hair will tend to absorb more colour and get darker results. You may need to vary the development time.
How can I avoid stains around my hairline?
After the colour has developed, very carefully loosen the colourant on the skin around the hairline before adding water and rinsing off.
How long should I rinse my hair for afterwards?
We recommend you dry-massage your hair to release the oils, add a little water, massage again and rinse until the water runs clear.
Should I use shampoo to rinse out the colourant?
When you rinse the hair, the colour will act as a shampoo. Use the conditioner after rinsing, once the water runs clear.
Can I create my own highlights?
It will depend on your natural or coloured colour and your technical skill. We recommend you talk to a hairdresser if this is a look you want to achieve.
Colour Questions
Which colours will work best on me?
Avoid anything more than two shades darker or lighter than your current colour. If your hair is already coloured, we recommend you only go darker as it’s difficult to lighten coloured hair. If your skin’s warm or olive in tone, try a warmer hair colour. Cool and rose complexions work well with cooler shades.
What if I've got different colours in my hair?
If different parts of your hair are different colours (e.g. due to previous dyeing) you may get a different effect. Also bear in mind that natural roots will need longer development time than ends.
How can I avoid orange/golden tones?
If you are lightening your hair, the process of lightening can bring out the natural warm undertones. The darker your hair, the warmer the tones are likely to be. This is what can make some hair look copper or golden when it is lightened.
Consider choosing a shade with an ash or cool reflect to counteract this. See ‘What do the shade numbers mean?’ below.
What do the shade number mean?
Like all Garnier shades, the Olia range is labelled according to a base number (between 1 and 10) followed by one or two reflect numbers.
The number before the decimal point represents the base colour eg. brown is 4. For base colours, 1 is black and 10 is very light blonde.
The number after the decimal point denotes the reflect eg gold/warm (3).. For reflects 1 is ash and 6 is red.
What if only my roots need colouring?
You may need to vary the development time throughout your hair. Follow the instruction leaflet for timings and application techniques.
Basic Information
How often should I colour my hair at home?
We'd say every 3 to 6 weeks is about right, but this may vary as everyone's hair is different.
Can pregnant women use Olia?
Hair colours can be used when pregnant. Ask your GP or midwife if you have any queries.
