How to identify your skin type

You should assess your skin type when your face is clean and before application of any skincare products. The best way to do this is to wash your face, wait for 15 minutes, and then have a close look at your complexion.

Skin that feels smooth, isn't too shiny and shows no signs of roughness or flaking is considered 'normal'. ‘Dry’ skin is characterised by a rough and flaky surface and a feeling of tightness, whilst ‘oily’ skin is shiny, often greasy and prone to breakouts or acne. If you have areas of oiliness, particularly in the ‘T-zone’ of the forehead, nose and chin, whereas the rest of your face is either normal or dry, you have what is known as 'combination' skin.

If you see lots of redness in the skin, there could be one of many causes for it. Sometimes redness is caused by rosacea, or it might simply be that the skin is very pale and shows lots of pink or red tones. Environmental irritation and stress can also worsen redness.

Finally, if you see fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and dullness, these are all signs of ageing or mature skin. Mature skin is also susceptible to dryness and may therefore feel rough and scaly.

La Roche-Posay products for normal to combination skin

Signs of combination skin include:

  • Oil in certain areas, such as the centre of the face or the T-zone
  • Enlarged pores and blackheads in oily areas, particularly on the nose
  • Dry or dull areas
  • Oiliness which increases after use of certain products such as moisturiser

Normal skin is unlikely to have any of these issues. Instead, it will likely look and feel smooth all over, and skin will not look too shiny or too dull.

la roche posays micellar water ultra

La Roche-Posay's Micellar Water Ultra is a great product for normal and combination skin. It is free from soap, alcohol and colour which makes it an incredibly gentle cleanser for removing makeup and impurities. Since it has a pH level that matches that of the skin, it won't upset the skin's natural biome.

The brand's signature Thermal Spring Water spray is also useful for normal or combination skin. It can be used as a gentle addition to your daily skincare routine as an alternative to toner after cleansing, or to simply freshen the skin throughout the day. It contains a variety of naturally-occurring, nourishing minerals to soothe and soften the complexion.

La Roche-Posay products for skin prone to redness

People might experience skin redness due to:

  • Natural fair skin tone
  • Gender (women experience redness more commonly but when men are affected, it is usually more severe)
  • Environmental factors such as harsh weather
  • Stress
  • Diet (alcohol and spicy food can lead to skin flushing)
  • Rosacea
  • Certain medication
la roche posay rosaliac cc cream

Rosaliac is La Roche-Posay's range designed to control and minimise redness. It includes moisturisers suitable for dry, oily and combination skin, as well as a CC Cream that provides lightweight coverage of redness while also hydrating and correcting redness through daily use.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a condition which leads to visible fine blood vessels on the surface of the skin, as well as small bumps, sensitivity and irritation. Rosaliac AR Intensive Serum is a great option for people with rosacea. It contains Ambophenol which works to strengthen the walls of blood vessels and reduce their size and visibility. Neurosensine is also included to soothe sore skin.

La Roche-Posay products for mature and ageing skin

Symptoms of ageing skin include:

  • Loss of elasticity and volume
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Dark spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Dullness
  • Dryness
  • Broken capillaries

These symptoms often occur as the skin naturally ages over time, but the ageing process can be accelerated by various factors such as sun exposure, exposure to harsh weather conditions, smoking and diet.

Ageing skin often benefits from products which contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid and retinol, both of which help to hydrate and plump the skin and minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Hyalu B5 and Retinol B3 serums from La Roche-Posay are both helpful for mature skin which is also sensitive and dehydrated.

To slow the signs of ageing, it is vital to protect the skin against the harmful effects of UV rays from the sun. Anthelios is La Roche-Posay's world-renowned collection of body and facial sunscreen products which are designed to provide efficient protection against the sun without leaving the skin feeling greasy or sticky.

The Anthelios Hydrating Cream is an ideal option for ageing skin which is often susceptible to dryness. It offers broad, photostable UVA/UVB and infrared protection while moisturising and nourishing the skin without greasiness, making it comfortable enough for daily wear.

Dark spots

la roche posay pigmentclar serum

The range is ideal for those with dark spots and uneven skin tone since it works to gradually reduce the appearance of pigmentation, making the complexion more uniform and radiant. Opt for the Pigmentclar Serum for a powerful daily dose of active ingredients, including PhE-Resorcinol, Ginkgo and Ferulic Acid, to brighten the complexion. It’s proven to improve skin irregularities: 80% of consumers reported that the serum made their complexion look more even, while 86% said it made the skin look more luminous.
