No-one likes to see their child suffer with a cold, yet we don’t want to over treat children with unnecessary medicines.
Our pharmacists have made suggestions of how to make your child more comfortable when they have a cold, without medicating them. A cold can last up to 10 days and these remedies do not shorten the time they are sick, but they will make the child more comfortable.
1) Lots of rest (all ages)
2) Bulb syringe reliefs congestion for child unable to blow their own nose.
3) Steamy air (all ages), helps loosen the mucus in the nasal passages. A warm bath has the added benefit of relaxing your child. For humidifiers or vapourisers follow manufacturers instructions.
4) Saline drops, help to clear a stuffy nose. Follow our pharmacists advice, especially for babies.
5) Vapor rubs (3 months and up) may help kids sleep better at night by “cooling the nose”.
6) Extra fluids (6 months and up) so they don’t get dehydrated and flushes and thins nasal secretions
7) Elevating the head (12 months and up) can help a child breath more comfortably
8) Nasal Rinse (5 years and up)
9) Give paracetamol if they have a temperature. It is important that a temperature is kept under control, especially in young children.
