McCabe’s Pharmacy – 30 years of family pharmacy and healthcare expertise in the community

Roy and Margaret McCabe opened their first pharmacy over thirty years ago having just returned home to Ireland from Australia where they had emigrated ten years earlier. Having worked in pharmacy in Australia and travelled around the world with a young family, Roy and Margaret had a strong understanding of what a good pharmacy service should contribute to the family and the community.

 

 

Settling down in Malahide, Roy and Margaret recognized the need in Ireland for a more dynamic pharmacy service, where the pharmacist would provide an extended role which also included health screening, counselling and lifestyle advice.

Over the years they designed their pharmacy services in line with what they, as parents and active community members, saw as being important. They also revolutionized the sector, leaning on their international experience and introducing innovative healthcare services to their pharmacy such as blood pressure tests, cholesterol tests and diabetes tests.

 

Thirty years on and the next generation now head up the pharmacy chain, with the three of four McCabe sisters, Sharen, Ciara, Áine involved in running 20 pharmacies in Dublin, Limerick, Wexford and Louth.

 

The pharmacy chain has evolved and developed over the years but the core values which inspired Roy and Margaret to set up their first pharmacy remain as strong as ever:

The pharmacy business expanded over the years based on the belief that hard work and a highly-trained, dedicated team could bring great results. Growing up in an entrepreneurial household, the McCabe daughters were not afraid of new ideas and McCabe’s Pharmacy was the first pharmacy group to roll out health screening services including tests on cholesterol, bone density, diabetes, prostate, thyroid and advice on nutrition and diet.

McCabe’s Pharmacy believes in empowering consumers to take a more proactive approach to their health, and its pharmacies have become the first port of call for many customers with their health queries.

The local community is always at the centre of everything McCabe’s Pharmacy does and the family has built deep links over the years with the communities which they serve, promoting healthcare initiatives in schools, participation in local sports clubs, elder care in the community, health support groups, local hospices and supporting local mental health and suicide prevention initiatives.
